Crime Branch Unit-6 in Nagpur has claimed to have traced a gang of vehicle thieves, amid a rise in vehicle thefts in the city. The police were investigating a vehicle theft case registered at Kalamna police station and arrested two accused during the probe. A third member of the gang is still absconding.

The police recovered 11 engines of different two-wheelers and a petrol tank from the possession of the accused.

The Crime Branch Unit-6 team was on patrol when it received information that an accused in a vehicle theft case was moving around the Kapil Nagar police station area. Acting on the tip-off, police detained Mayur Borkar, 22, and questioned him.

According to the police, Borkar admitted during questioning to being involved in vehicle thefts. The investigation also showed that he stole two-wheelers from different parts of the city with his associate Ritik.

Police said the stolen vehicles were not sold directly. Their parts were first stripped and then sold to an associate who ran a garage.

In the further investigation, police raided this garage. During the search they found the engines of 11 different bikes and a petrol tank. Police then also arrested Anand Agrawal, 38, a resident of Shantinagar.

The police have handed both accused over to Kalamna police for further action. They are now trying to find out in which police station areas of Nagpur the gang committed thefts, and how many stolen vehicles were dismantled and their parts sold.

The search for the absconding accused, Ritik, continues. Police hope the Crime Branch action will bring out more information about the network linked to vehicle theft.
