Recruitment of contract teachers in Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) schools has been put on hold for now. The election programme for the Nagpur division graduates' constituency was announced, and the model code of conduct came into force soon after. The civic administration took the decision for this reason, the education department said. The recruitment process will remain suspended until further orders.

The NMC education department has sent clear instructions to the headmasters of all schools. The instructions say no further action connected with recruitment should be taken while the code of conduct is in force. The process of appointing contract teachers for the 2026-27 academic session in NMC schools had already begun.

The recruitment was being carried out through school management committees. The plan was to engage teachers on a temporary basis for the remaining eight months, up to May 10, 2027. The process was started keeping in view the need for teachers in schools, but it was decided to halt it after the election programme was announced and the code of conduct came into force.

Meanwhile, experts say the model code of conduct came into force as soon as the graduates' election was announced. According to them, such orders should have been issued immediately afterwards, but the administration woke up a week later.

NMC education officer Amit Bhadane has directed the headmasters of all NMC schools in the city to follow the ban on recruitment strictly. No further proceedings or activity related to recruitment should be carried out at the school level while the code of conduct remains in force.

The department has also spoken about what happens next. After the election programme for the Nagpur division graduates' constituency ends and the model code of conduct period is over, it will be decided how to take the contract teacher recruitment process forward. A revised timetable with changes will be drawn up and communicated to all the schools concerned.

The NMC administration has also asked all schools to inform candidates interested in the recruitment, and those concerned, about the ban at once. They should also be told the current status of the recruitment process.
