Maruti Suzuki September sales rise, utility vehicles jump 62%, but shares fall 5%
Maruti Suzuki sold 1,81,838 passenger vehicles in September 2026, up 36.91%, yet its shares fell about 5% on October 1 amid a broad auto-sector sell-off.
Maruti Suzuki has once again shown its hold on the automobile sector. The company's September 2026 sales set new records, and good performance in utility vehicles (SUVs and MPVs) and passenger vehicles has strengthened its position in the market.
In September 2026, Maruti Suzuki sold a total of 1,81,838 passenger vehicles in the domestic market. In the same month last year, September 2025, the figure was 1,32,820 units. Sales have thus risen 36.91%.
Including exports, supplies to other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and light commercial vehicles (LCVs), total sales reached 2,36,013 units, a year-on-year increase of 24.44%.
The biggest jump came in the utility vehicle segment. Sales of these vehicles stood at 78,911 units in September, against 48,695 units last year, an increase of 62.05%. The segment includes the Brezza, Ertiga, e Vitara, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, Victoris and XL6.
Sales of passenger cars (mini, compact and midsize) were 91,887 units, a rise of 24.02%. Sales of the Eeco van rose 10.01% to 11,040 units. The company's total sales for the July-September quarter have also reached 6.96 lakh units.
Despite such good sales figures, Maruti's shares fell about 5% on October 1. The Nifty Auto index also declined by about 3.7%, which points to broader selling in the auto sector.
Market analysts believe that this selling in the automobile sector and the 3.7% fall in the Nifty Auto index directly affected Maruti Suzuki's stock. While vehicle sales figures were strong, the company's shares declined in the stock market.
