Long weekends and holidays with the family often shape which car buyers choose, and comfort for every member of the household has become a top priority. That is why the choice between the Maruti Baleno and the Hyundai i20 for family use has become a hot contest in the market.

The Maruti Suzuki Baleno and the Hyundai i20 are considered two key options for buyers of premium hatchbacks in the Indian market. Both lineups have changed in 2026. Hyundai launched some i20 variants at more affordable prices in February, while Maruti Suzuki introduced the new Baleno in September with an updated design and new features.

On the engine front, the new Baleno gets a 1.2-litre Z12E petrol engine producing 61 kW, or around 83 PS, and 112.4 Nm of torque, with a 5-speed manual or AGS automatic transmission on offer. According to the company's official figures, the manual version returns 23.80 km/l and the AGS version 24.77 km/l. The Hyundai i20, on the other hand, uses a 1.2-litre Kappa petrol engine, also offered with a 5-speed manual or IVT automatic transmission.

The two cars are closely matched on features as well. The new Baleno gets a 9-inch SmartPlay Pro+ infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, along with a head-up display, a 360-degree camera, a wireless smartphone charger and a Clarion premium sound system. The top variant of the Hyundai i20 offers a 10.25-inch HD touchscreen infotainment and navigation system, a Bose 7-speaker premium audio system, a wireless charger and Bluelink connected features.

One highlight of the new Baleno is ventilated front seats with leatherette upholstery, useful on long drives in India's heat. The Hyundai i20 offers a voice-enabled electric sunroof. The two cars thus differ somewhat in their cabin feature focus.

On safety, the biggest update in the new Baleno is Level-2 ADAS. This radar and camera based system includes advanced emergency braking, lane keep assist, lane departure prevention, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, high beam assist, vehicle sway warning and forward collision warning. The Baleno also gets six airbags, ESP, ABS-EBD, hill hold control, reverse parking sensors, 3-point seatbelts and TPMS. The Hyundai i20 also comes with six airbags as standard, while its top variant offers ESC, hill start assist control, TPMS and a dashcam among its safety and driving-related features.

On price, the new Maruti Suzuki Baleno has a starting ex-showroom price of Rs 6.09 lakh as of September 2026. The Hyundai i20 has a starting ex-showroom price of Rs 5.99 lakh, with its current range going up to around Rs 10.63 lakh. The actual ex-showroom and on-road prices can vary by variant, city and transmission chosen, so buyers should check the latest price for their city with the company or dealer before purchase.

Both cars offer plenty of safety and comfort features for family use. The Baleno's biggest strengths are Level-2 ADAS, ventilated front seats, a head-up display and a 360-degree camera, while the i20 offers a larger 10.25-inch screen, Bose 7-speaker audio, an electric sunroof and, on some variants, a dashcam. Buyers should weigh not just the feature count but also budget, chosen variant, transmission, must-have safety features, rear seat comfort and on-road prices in their own city before deciding.
