Biloli Additional Sessions Court sentenced Venkat Basvant Nakkawar, 32, to life imprisonment and fined him Rs 5,000 for killing his brother Sanjay over farmland.

A court in Nanded district has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his own brother with a stone in a dispute over farmland. The Additional Sessions Court at Biloli also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the convict. District Judge-1 and Additional Sessions Judge R. V. Huddar pronounced the verdict on October 30.

The convict is Venkat Basvant Nakkawar, 32, a resident of Hanuman Hipparga village in Deglur taluka.

The incident took place on August 28, 2023, at about 8.45 pm in front of the Birudev temple in Hanuman Hipparga. Venkat is said to have asked his brother, Sanjay Basvant Nakkawar, to give him a share of the additional land meant for use. The two brothers quarrelled over this.

During the quarrel, Venkat knocked Sanjay down and sat on his chest. He then struck Sanjay's head and chest hard with a stone. Sanjay died on the spot.

The deceased's wife, Gangamani Nakkawar, lodged a complaint at Deglur police station, on which the police registered a murder case. The then Sub-Inspector R. K. Munde investigated the case. He drew up the scene-of-crime panchnama, seized articles, obtained the forensic science laboratory report, recorded the statement of an eyewitness and collected medical evidence. A chargesheet was then filed in court under Sessions Case No. 71/2023.

Under the guidance of Superintendent of Police Dr Nilabh Rohan, the trial monitoring cell kept a continuous watch on the hearing of the case. Nine witnesses were examined for the prosecution. The court held Venkat guilty on the strength of the eyewitness testimony and the other available evidence.

Assistant Public Prosecutor Sandeep Bhimrao Kundalwadikar argued the case for the prosecution. Pairavi staff member Shivraj Sakhare assisted him. The information was given by police public relations officer Ashish Borate.
