Mahindra XEV 9S topped India's electric car sales in August 2026, narrowly beating Tata Punch EV by 78 units.
India's electric car sales saw a major shake-up in August 2026. Tata Punch EV had held the title of best-selling electric car until now, but this time it lost the top spot by a margin of just 78 units.
Mahindra XEV 9S dispatched 4,508 units to dealerships last month to claim the number one position, while Tata Punch EV came second with sales of 4,430 units. Following the close contest between the two, Tata Nexon EV and MG Windsor EV also performed well, each selling more than 3,700 units.
The Mahindra XEV 9S, launched last November, sold 4,508 units in August to take first place in the electric car rankings. This three-row electric SUV edged out the Tata Punch EV by just 78 units. Mahindra offers this EV in three battery options, 59kWh, 70kWh and 79kWh. Depending on the variant, its range is said to be between 521 km and 679 km. It has a starting price of Rs 20.65 lakh (ex-showroom).
Tata Punch EV came second last month with sales of 4,430 units. Although it narrowly missed the top spot, its annual sales have jumped sharply. Sales have tripled compared to 1,476 units in August 2025, a year-on-year growth of 200 percent. On price, the Punch EV is significantly cheaper than the XEV 9S, with a starting price of Rs 9.79 lakh (ex-showroom). It is available with a standard (30kWh) or long-range (40kWh) battery pack.
Tata Nexon EV came third, with 3,975 units sold in August 2026. The same month last year saw 2,766 units sold, a year-on-year growth of 44 percent. This EV comes with 30kWh and 45kWh battery pack options and has a starting price of Rs 12.49 lakh (ex-showroom).
MG Windsor EV came fourth, with 3,705 units supplied in August. But unlike the top three, Windsor's annual sales declined. Compared to August 2025, when 4,511 units were sold, sales fell 18 percent in August 2026. This EV has a starting price of Rs 14.70 lakh (ex-showroom). It comes in two battery pack options: the standard variant has a 38kWh battery with a claimed range of 332 km, while the pro variant has a larger 52.9kWh battery with a range of 449 km.
Tata Harrier EV came fifth, with 2,103 units sold in August. This electric SUV recorded 18 percent year-on-year growth in sales compared to 1,780 units in August 2025. With Harrier EV in fifth place, Tata now has three models in the top five electric car list. This EV has a starting price of Rs 21.79 lakh (ex-showroom) and is available in 65kWh and 75kWh battery options.
