Mahindra Thar OG vs Thar ROXX: doors, space and price compared
Mahindra's 3-door Thar OG starts at Rs 10.32 lakh and the 5-door Thar ROXX at Rs 12.52 lakh, but the two suit different buyers.
Mahindra has launched the updated Thar OG, a 3-door SUV with a starting ex-showroom price of Rs 10.32 lakh. The 5-door Thar ROXX, already on sale, starts at Rs 12.52 lakh. Both are built on the same body-on-frame platform and share the same 4x4 DNA, but they are meant for different uses and different buyers.
The Thar OG has a 3-door, 4-seater layout. It gets a new M_Glyde 4G platform, rear Pentalink suspension, electric power steering and an electronic locking differential, updates aimed at both everyday driving and off-road ability. Its compact size makes its smaller dimensions an advantage on narrow trails and rough off-road stretches.
The Thar ROXX, in contrast, has 5 doors and a 5-seater cabin. Its longer wheelbase gives rear passengers more legroom, while a 447-litre boot makes it easier to carry luggage. It also gets rear AC vents and a more usable rear seat, making it more practical for a daily office commute, family use and long highway drives.
On engines, the Thar OG offers a 2.0-litre mStallion petrol and 1.5-litre and 2.2-litre mHawk diesel options. After the update, the 2.0-litre petrol engine puts out around 330 Nm of torque, and the 2.2-litre diesel also produces 330 Nm. The Thar ROXX is also offered with the 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines.
The real question is which one suits which buyer. If the use is mainly weekend off-roading and adventure trips with relatively fewer passengers, the Thar OG's 3-door layout and compact size are worth considering. But if it is for daily family use, an office commute, regular rear-seat passengers and long drives, the Thar ROXX's 5-door layout, larger cabin space and bigger boot are more useful. Mahindra has positioned the two models for these different needs.
