For those whose own or their children's marriages keep facing obstacles, whose matches are breaking, or who have not found a suitable partner even after growing older, Navratri's Mahanavami is said to be highly auspicious. This year Mahanavami falls on October 20. The day is considered best for worshipping Goddess Siddhidatri and for the fulfilment of wishes.
It is believed that religious and astrological remedies performed on this day can quickly remove all obstacles to marriage, big or small. Worship of Goddess Durga carries special significance on Mahanavami. On this day, a ghee lamp can be lit before the goddess and a prayer offered for a happy married life.
The first remedy involves yellow items and turmeric. While worshipping Goddess Durga on Mahanavami, offer her turmeric roots, yellow flowers and yellow-coloured items. After the puja, apply a little turmeric on the forehead or neck. It is said that this strengthens Jupiter and opens the way to marriage.
The second remedy is to light a four-faced lamp before the goddess. On the evening of Mahanavami, near the home shrine, light a lamp of pure cow's ghee that burns on all four sides before Goddess Siddhidatri. While lighting it, pray to Goddess Durga for an early marriage and a suitable partner. According to religious belief, this remedy removes negative energy linked to marriage.
The third remedy is chanting the mantras of Goddess Katyayani. On the ninth day of Navratri, chanting the siddha mantras of Mata Katyayani is considered very effective for marriage. On Mahanavami, chanting the mantra "Om Katyayani Mahamaye Mahayoginyadhishwari" 108 times with a red sandalwood rosary is said to remove quickly all obstacles to finding the desired partner.
The fourth remedy is for the time of Kanya Pujan. When girls come to your home on Mahanavami, give one of the nine girls a red scarf, cosmetics and fruit. Then take that girl's blessing. It is believed that a girl's blessing is the blessing of Goddess Durga herself, and helps fulfil the dream of an early marriage.
