The name of Tukaram Mundhe, Commissioner of Food and Drug Administration, is widely talked about in Maharashtra these days. For the past few months, he has been acting against adulteration in the state. Reaching spots where rules are being broken, taking action on the spot, sealing shops and taking a tough stand on people's health: this work of his is finding favour with the public.
The buzz is no longer confined to offices or the news. His craze has reached the Navratri garba grounds. During fancy-dress garba contests this Navratri, small children are turning up as Tukaram Mundhe, and videos of them are going viral on social media.
In one video, a little boy is dressed just like Mundhe. He wears a formal shirt and trousers, has a small moustache, glasses on his eyes, an ID card around his neck and a file in his hand. One child even carried a placard. It read "I am little Tukaram Mundhe" and, below it, "Honesty is the best policy".
When children in such costumes come on to the garba stage, people welcome them with applause and whistles. Children usually dress as characters such as Jethalal, Singham or the Rani of Jhansi. Turning up this time as an honest officer is truly different.
The mention of a government officer usually brings corruption to mind, but Mundhe's name is regarded as different. He is known for his strict discipline. He has been transferred many times, but wherever he has gone, he has left his mark through his work.
No compromise on rules, transparency in work and public interest as the first priority: for this reason, the common man feels respect for him. That is why people love it when small children take on his avatar. These videos have been watched by more than five lakh people.
People are also posting funny comments on the videos. One user, sahnavaidya, wrote that people have finally started to look up to the right person. Another user, pranita_thakur26, wrote: "Well done, child, Tukaram sir will soon come to meet you."
nehasalviofficial joked that Mundhe will soon visit your mother's kitchen, because these days he is watching over adulteration in homes too. Many people have praised the children with laughing emojis.
