Nagpur: A counterfeit note racket is said to have been run from a rented house in Nagpur, and the matter has come to the notice of the police. It came to light because the landlord was alert. Suspected fake notes worth about Rs 85 lakh were reportedly found during the action.
Ramesh Harde owns a house in Chaitanyeshwar Nagar, under the Wathoda police station limits. A tenant, Pushpak Bhandarkar, lives in it. According to Harde, Pushpak has not paid rent for several months, and the dues have run into lakhs of rupees.
Harde also said that when he asked for the rent, the tenant threatened him by showing fear of a weapon. Complaints had been made earlier at the Wathoda police station in this regard.
Harde suspected that Pushpak was doing something suspicious. He contacted the police and office-bearers of the MNS and informed them. The police then searched Pushpak's room. They found large bundles of printed paper resembling currency notes, a printer and other material.
The incident has caused a stir in the area. The MNS has demanded a thorough inquiry into the matter.
In the police search, notes of about Rs 37 lakh in the size of Rs 500 notes were found printed on both sides. Notes worth about Rs 48 lakh were also found printed on one side only. In all, suspected counterfeit notes worth about Rs 85 lakh were recovered. Police were counting and examining the notes until late at night.
When the police contacted the accused, they learned that he was in Mumbai. The police have registered a case and begun further investigation. They are also looking into what the notes actually are and whether anyone else was involved in the alleged operation.
