The Indian men's hockey team defeated Indonesia 13-1 in their opening Group A match at the Asian Games 2026 on Sunday. The emphatic win gave the team a strong start to their campaign to defend their title.

Eight Indian players found the net, with Dilpreet Singh scoring the most with four goals. India played aggressively from the start of the match. In the sixth minute, Shilanand Lakra converted the rebound of a Harmanpreet Singh drag flick into a goal. Abhishek doubled the lead in the 12th minute. By the end of the first quarter, India had established complete dominance over the Indonesian players, with the score at 2-0.

In the second quarter, Dilpreet Singh took an aggressive approach, opening his account with goals in the 18th and 19th minutes. Rajinder Singh also scored in the 19th minute, and Mandeep Singh added a goal in the 21st minute to maintain India's grip on the game. In the 28th minute, Harmanpreet Singh won a penalty corner. By half time, India's lead had grown to 7-0.

At the start of the third quarter, Indonesia scored their first goal of the match. Indonesia's captain Aulia Al Ard converted a penalty corner in the 33rd minute. India sought a video referral on the goal, but the decision went in Indonesia's favour.

Despite this setback, the Indian team recovered quickly and stepped up their attacks. Shilanand Lakra scored his second goal of the match in the 35th minute, while Dilpreet Singh completed his hat-trick in the 37th minute. A minute later, in the 38th minute, Sukhjeet Singh scored to take India's lead to 10-1 in the third quarter. In the final quarter, India gave Indonesia no chance of a comeback, adding three more goals themselves to seal the match 13-1.

India's next match will be against Sri Lanka on September 22.
