India win silver in mixed 4x400m relay by just 0.08 seconds at Asian Games
India edged out Vietnam by 0.08 seconds to win silver in the mixed 4x400m relay at the Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan
Indian athletes produced another impressive performance at the Asian Games 2026, being held at Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium in Nagoya, Japan, on Thursday. The Indian team clocked 3 minutes 14.46 seconds to win the silver medal in the 4x400m mixed relay.
India's quartet of Machettira Poovamma, Vishal Thennarasu, Ramraj Vithya and Thekkinalil Manu ran the race. It was a closely fought contest, and in the final moments the Indian athletes overtook the Vietnamese runners to secure second place. Bahrain won the gold medal in the event, setting a new Games record with a time of 3:12.87 seconds.
The most striking aspect of the race was that the gap between India and Vietnam was just 0.08 seconds. India took this narrow 0.08-second lead early in the race, and it held all the way to the finish, allowing the Indian team to cross the line in second place ahead of Vietnam.
Vithya, regarded as the team's lead runner, had earlier competed for India in the 4x400m relay at the Paris Olympics 2024. She led the team to this medal as well. Vithya also has a silver medal in the mixed 4x400m relay from the 2022 Asian Games and a bronze medal in the 400m hurdles from the 2023 Asian Games to her name.
India's performance at the Asian Games 2026 in Japan has been strong from the start, with the country winning more than 15 medals so far. Indian athletes have also shone in athletics. In the same vein, Indian runner Seema Kumari won the bronze medal with an excellent run in the women's 10,000m race.
