The five-match T20 international series between India and New Zealand begins tomorrow. The first match will be played in Christchurch on Thursday, October 22, and will start at 12.30 pm Indian Standard Time.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar has returned to the squad after about four years, so attention will be on whether he takes the field in the first match. Captain Shreyas Iyer has already said that Vaibhav Suryavanshi will have to wait longer for his chance. Who gets a place in the playing XI will be worth watching.
Suryavanshi is a young and explosive batter who has been touring with the team for a long time. He was also picked for the five-match T20 series against the West Indies that ended recently, but did not get a game. Iyer said it is difficult for Suryavanshi to break into the XI easily for now, because Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson are playing well consistently as openers.
Suryavanshi made his T20 international debut during the England tour this year and has played only eight matches since. During the Asian Games, Iyer gave him a chance to open the innings, with Samson batting at No. 3. During the West Indies series, however, he was again kept out of the XI.
In pace bowling, Arshdeep Singh is currently India's lead fast bowler. Only one of Prince Yadav and Mayank Yadav can play. Nitish Kumar Reddy is also a pace option. If India go in with three main pace bowlers, Bhuvneshwar could be given a chance. He has performed well in the last two IPL seasons and bowled superbly in the final overs, which could make him deserving of a place. India have been struggling in the final overs for some time, and Bhuvneshwar could prove useful there.
In spin, the return of Varun Chakravarthy could be important for India. He missed the 2026 Asian Games and the T20 series against the West Indies because of injury. His return could mean Kuldeep Yadav sits out. All-rounder Naman Dhir is also likely to get a place in the XI, having played all five T20s of the home series against the West Indies. However, it will not be easy for Axar Patel to find a place in the XI.
India's probable XI for the first T20 is: Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer (captain), Tilak Varma, Naman Dhir, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy.
