The Indian car market has changed greatly over the past ten years. Many companies strengthened their position with new SUVs, modern features and electric vehicles. Honda, however, has faced major difficulties during the same period.
Honda's market share in India has fallen from nearly 7% to 1.3%. The company's domestic car sales are down about 68% from their peak in financial year 2016. Notably, the country's passenger vehicle market has grown 66% over the same period. In other words, Honda's sales dropped even as the market expanded.
Demand for SUVs kept rising in India and customer preferences shifted considerably. Buyers began to favour vehicles with high ground clearance, attractive design, large cabins and modern technology. Many rival companies kept launching new models in this segment. By comparison, Honda's car portfolio in India lacked new models and SUV options.
Cars such as the Honda City and Amaze have earned recognition in the Indian market. But as competition grew in the SUV segment, it became difficult for the company to depend only on sedans and compact cars. Widening its product range and bringing new vehicles to market on time has become important in line with customers' changing expectations.
Companies such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata Motors and Mahindra have offered many SUV options at different price points, making it easier for customers to choose a vehicle to suit their budget. Competition among the companies has also grown in features, safety, connected technology and fuel efficiency. Honda now faces the challenge of retaining its old reputation for reliability while attracting new customers.
To halt the fall in sales, Honda is now focusing on new SUVs and electric vehicles. Meeting the needs of Indian customers and increasing its presence in the market with the help of new models are the company's key goals. To succeed, however, the right pricing, attractive features, a strong sales network and timely launches will be crucial.
Regaining a strong position in the Indian market will not be easy for Honda. How effectively the new SUV and EV plans are carried out will show the picture of the company's path ahead.
