A home guard managing traffic at Indora Chowk in Nagpur was assaulted, police said. The accused, identified as biker Mayur Gajbhiye, has been booked at Pachpaoli police station. He has been absconding since the incident and police are searching for him.
According to police, the dispute began over clearing a traffic jam. After an argument at Indora Chowk, the accused hurled obscene abuse at the home guard and beat him with fists and hands, before fleeing the spot.
Police said the victim is home guard Ghanshyam Raut, 43, a resident of Lashkaribagh. Raut has served in the Maharashtra Home Guard for 17 years and is currently posted with the Lakadganj branch of the traffic department.
The incident took place at around 9:15 pm. Raut and his colleagues were working to ease traffic between Chambhar Nala Chowk and Indora Chowk. A costly motorbike came from the direction of Indora Chowk. Mayur Gajbhiye, 35, a resident of Beltarodi who was riding pillion, asked Raut why the traffic jam was not being cleared quickly.
Raut replied that efforts to ease the traffic were under way. A heated argument broke out between the two over this. It is alleged that Gajbhiye got off the bike in anger, went up to Raut and began hurling obscene abuse at him. He then beat him with fists and hands.
After the assault, the accused fled. Raut then lodged a complaint at Pachpaoli police station.
On the basis of the complaint, police have booked Gajbhiye under several sections, including obstructing a public servant in the discharge of duty and assault. The accused is still said to be absconding. Police are searching for him and the case is under investigation.
