Hit-and-run car injures child in Nagpur, residents surround police station
A speeding car driven by a young woman injured a four-year-old boy in Nagpur's Kalmana area, and fled the scene, sparking a residents' protest at the police station.
An accident in the Shikshak Colony area of Kalmana left a four-year-old boy seriously injured after a car driver hit him, prompting angry residents to surround the local police station.
Despite tough action promised by the city police, hit-and-run cases have not stopped. In Kalmana's Shikshak Colony, a young woman driving a car hit a four-year-old boy who was playing in the veranda of his house, injuring him seriously. Angered that police had taken no action against the accused woman and her family, the boy's relatives surrounded the Kalmana police station on Sunday night. The incident has caused strong anger among residents.
Shivansh, the four-year-old son of Sachin Deshmukh, a resident of Shikshak Colony, was playing in the veranda of his house at 5 pm on September 23. At the time, other children of the colony were also playing outside their homes. Seeing this, Shivansh came near the gate of his house and continued playing. At that moment, a car bearing registration number MH-49-DA-0744 passed by. The car was being driven by a young woman, with a friend seated beside her. The woman's car hit Shivansh, who was thrown some distance and fell. He suffered deep injuries to his head, hands and legs. People from the neighbourhood ran to help and stopped the car. They took Shivansh in the same car to Bhavani Hospital in Pardi. As soon as they reached the hospital, the woman got out of the car and fled. Given his critical condition, Shivansh was admitted to the ICU.
When the woman's family learned of the incident, they reached the hospital. They refused to let the woman give any information about the accident. Shivansh's family lodged a complaint at the Kalmana police station and demanded action from the police. The woman's family reportedly began urging Shivansh's family to stay calm about the matter.
Alleging that the Kalmana police were being slow to act, Shivansh's relatives and other residents surrounded the Kalmana police station on Sunday night. They said the lack of strict police action had emboldened the woman's family, who were instead threatening them, confident that nothing could be done to them. Residents surrounded the police station between 11 pm and 2 am, demanding action against the woman and her family. The Kalmana police denied being slow to act, saying the boy's family had initially been trying to settle the matter, which is why they had not filed a complaint earlier.
