HC extends TET pass deadline for teachers to August 2028
The High Court disposed of petitions by women teachers after being told the TET pass deadline is now August 2028 and a new syllabus is in place.
Kirti Vairagade and several other women teachers had filed petitions in the High Court demanding that the syllabus for the Teacher Eligibility Test, based on the curriculum for classes 1 to 8, be prepared and the exam conducted accordingly. A bench of Justice Anil Pansare and Justice Nivedita Mehta heard all these petitions together.
During the hearing, the court was informed that the deadline for teachers to pass the TET exam has now been extended to August 31, 2028. In addition, a comprehensive and detailed syllabus for the exam has also been finalised in June 2026. Taking both these developments into account, the court disposed of all the petitions.
The matter had begun after the administration issued a notice stating that teachers who did not pass the TET exam before March 31, 2020, would lose their jobs. The women teachers had approached the court against this notice. The government placed this information before the court during the hearing.
In its observations, the court said the syllabus based on classes 1 to 8 has been in force since 2013, and the petitioners themselves had appeared for the exam several times earlier without raising any objection at the time. The court also clarified that the Supreme Court had already settled the legal question relating to passing the TET exam in the case of State of UP versus Anjuman Ishaat-e-Taleem Trust and others.
The court was also told that the deadline for teachers to pass the TET exam has now been extended to August 31, 2028. On the syllabus, the court said it already existed and that the government had separately finalised a detailed and comprehensive syllabus for it in June 2026.
The petitioners' lawyers raised no objection on this point either. On this basis, the High Court said that since the deadline for passing TET had been extended and a new syllabus had also been finalised in June 2026, the grievance raised in the petitions stood resolved. The court accordingly disposed of all the related petitions.
