GST Council's 57th meeting postponed by a day to October 8
The meeting, the first in over a year, will now be held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi at 11 am on October 8 instead of October 7.
The date of the 57th meeting of the GST Council has been changed. Traders and taxpayers had been waiting for the meeting for some time. It was earlier scheduled for October 7 but has now been pushed back by a day. On Monday, the GST Council Secretariat issued an office memorandum giving the new date.
Under the new schedule, the meeting will be held on October 8 in the summit room of Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. It will begin at 11 am. The meeting will thus be held in Delhi as planned, only a day later.
On why the meeting was put off, the Secretariat said only that it had been postponed to October 8 owing to unavoidable circumstances. No further reason was given. The Council is chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and includes the finance ministers of the states. The meeting is being held after more than a year.
The memorandum is dated October 5 and was issued with the approval of the Revenue Secretary, who is also the ex-officio secretary of the GST Council. The Secretariat has directed that members of the Council be informed of the change in schedule. The Council's meeting had earlier been postponed because of the BRICS summit as well.
The last meeting, the 56th, was held on September 3 and 4, 2025. At it, the Centre and the states decided on major changes to Goods and Services Tax rates and slabs, including a key decision to cut rates. Under that decision, GST moved to a two-tier structure of 5% and 18% from September 22, 2025.
The highest rate of 40% has been set for ultra-luxury items and "sin goods". With the change, the four slabs of 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% that had been in force since July 1, 2017 were done away with.
