A heart-wrenching incident came to light in Gondia on Monday, where a pregnant woman delivered a stillborn baby and later died during treatment at Bai Gangabai Women's Hospital. The deceased woman has been identified as Pooja Farkunde, 25. Following the incident, her family has alleged negligence by doctors and demanded an investigation into the matter.

Dr Vinayak Rukhmode, Dean of the medical college, said the woman's hemoglobin level was only 5 grams, which had left her condition critical. According to Dr Rukhmode, her condition was serious due to severe blood deficiency, and necessary treatment including blood transfusion was administered for this reason.

According to the hospital, Pooja Farkunde was undergoing treatment at Ravanwadi Primary Health Centre during her pregnancy. When she went into labour, tests found her hemoglobin level to be only 5 grams. She was then referred to Bai Gangabai Women's Hospital in Gondia for further treatment, where she was given a blood transfusion and treatment began.

However, the baby died after delivery, and Pooja's condition subsequently deteriorated. Family members questioned why she was not referred earlier to a larger hospital for advanced treatment given her critical condition. The deceased woman's uncle, Mastaram Kosarkar, said Pooja had been undergoing regular treatment at Ravanwadi Primary Health Centre.

After the incident, angry family members staged a protest outside the hospital. They allege that if proper treatment and nutritious food had been arranged in view of the low hemoglobin during pregnancy, the tragedy could perhaps have been averted.

Social worker Lokesh Yadav alleged that there was reportedly a difference of opinion among doctors over an injection given to Pooja at Ravanwadi Primary Health Centre. The family has demanded an impartial investigation into the entire course of treatment, from Ravanwadi Primary Health Centre to the Gondia hospital, to determine at which stage the lapse occurred. They have demanded strict action against whoever is found guilty in the probe.

The loss of both mother and child in a single incident has cast a pall of grief over the area.
