CBI catches WCL senior overseer taking Rs 40,000 bribe in Umred
The CBI's anti-corruption branch caught Pawan Nakhate, a senior overseer at Western Coalfields Limited's Umred Area, on Wednesday accepting Rs 40,000 from a contractor.
Nagpur: The anti-corruption branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday caught a senior overseer of the Umred Area of Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000. The accused is Pawan Nakhate, senior overseer (civil) in the Gokul Murpar sub-area of the Umred Area.
According to the CBI, a contractor filed a complaint on September 29. The contractor had been given work by WCL at the Pirwa village rehabilitation site: building two borewells for drinking water and installing submersible pumps, an internal main line and a distribution pipeline.
The contractor alleged that Nakhate had demanded Rs 50,000 to release payment of his third bill. The bill amount was Rs 25.35 lakh.
On September 29, the CBI verified the complaint in the presence of an independent witness. During the verification, Nakhate asked for Rs 44,000, which was about two per cent of the Rs 22 lakh already paid. He also asked for Rs 10,000 that was outstanding from an earlier case, taking his demand to Rs 54,000. During the conversation, Nakhate agreed to accept Rs 50,000.
The CBI then registered a case against Nakhate under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (amended in 2018).
The CBI laid a trap on Wednesday. Nakhate met the complainant near Gangapur Chowk in Umred and was caught red-handed accepting Rs 40,000 from the complainant. The action was taken under the guidance of CBI Superintendent Rishikesh Sonawane.
