The gas cylinder is today's hearth in the kitchen. It is essential for daily cooking, and almost every household now has a gas connection. But with the rising price of cylinders, many people find using one increasingly expensive.

Whether because of elaborate dishes or constant use, a cylinder sometimes runs out before the month is over. Homemakers are then left wondering how to make it last as long as possible. A cylinder usually lasts a month, but if a few tips are kept in mind, it can be made to last longer.

First, make it a habit to cover the pot or pan while cooking. When the vessel is covered, less heat escapes and vegetables cook faster, so less gas is used overall. Whether cooking rice or vegetables, do not forget the lid. This will save a good amount of gas over the month.

Second, the burner. A dirty or clogged burner can increase gas consumption. If oil, spices or food particles have collected in the burner holes, wipe the dirt out thoroughly with a cloth. Clean the burner from time to time. A blue, steady flame generally means all is well, but if there is any change, have the burner checked.

Third, the high flame. Many people believe that food cooks faster on a high flame and saves gas. That is not so. While cooking vegetables, dal or rice, keep the flame low or medium as needed. Use a high flame only where it is required.

Fourth, gas leakage. If a cylinder is running out faster than before, cooking habits are not always to blame. A leak in the gas pipe, regulator or connection can also be the cause. If there are holes in the pipe, it is broken or the connections are loose, do not attempt repairs yourself. Have a trained technician inspect it and get any fault fixed. Also remember to switch off the cylinder after use.
