Four men on a motorcycle held up an employee at gunpoint at a Wanadongri jeweller's on Saturday afternoon and fled towards Nagpur with about 40 tolas of gold.
A jewellery shop in Wanadongri in Nagpur district was robbed in broad daylight on Saturday. The area falls under the MIDC police station. Four robbers reportedly arrived on a motorcycle and entered the shop. At gunpoint, they beat up the shop employee and fled with 40 tolas of gold from the safe.
The incident took place at Dhomne Jewellers, owned by Rajesh Dhomne, next to the veterinary hospital in Wanadongri. At 3.45 pm on Saturday, employee Shubham Hadge was sitting inside. Rajesh was not in the shop at the time. Four youths on a motorcycle stopped in front of it.
Two of them went in first. The other two looked around and then followed. As soon as they were inside, they pulled the shutter down. They then trained a pistol on Shubham and first snatched his mobile phone.
The accused then stuffed about 40 tolas of gold ornaments from the counter and the safe into a bag. When Shubham shouted, he was threatened with being shot. The accused then lifted the shutter and walked out.
As they fled on the motorcycle, Shubham bravely grabbed the man sitting at the back and held on tightly. Despite repeated attempts, the bike did not stop and Shubham was dragged along. After some distance he fell and was injured. Other residents also chased the accused but did not succeed. The accused fled towards Nagpur.
Shubham immediately informed his employer Rajesh, who alerted the police. On receiving the news, MIDC police station in-charge Baburao Raut reached the spot with his team. Joint Commissioner of Police Navinchandra Reddy and DIG Rajendra Dabhade arrived along with crime branch teams.
CCTV footage shows the accused fleeing on the bike, but only one face is visible. One wore a helmet, while the other two had scarves tied over their faces. Police were tracing the accused through CCTV footage and phone location data. They suspect the accused had first carried out a recce of the shop before committing the crime.
The daylight robbery has caused alarm across the area. Local residents and traders are frightened, and the police are on alert. MIDC police are investigating from every angle. Office-bearers of the bullion traders' association also reached the spot and demanded that the police arrest the accused soon.
