Ganeshotsav is over and the month of Shravan has also ended. Since then, fish markets across the Konkan have seen large crowds of buyers. Konkan residents and fish lovers are turning up in large numbers to shop. The Konkan's scenic coastline has an identity of its own, but these days it is the buying of fish in its markets that is the talk of the region.

The biggest crowd is at Dandi beach in Malvan, Sindhudurg district. As Ganeshotsav has just ended, people are coming here in large numbers to buy fish. Fishermen bring large quantities of fish here for sale. Alongside retail buying and selling, fish are also auctioned here. The fish that arrives at Dandi beach is fresh, which is why people head there.

With Ganeshotsav and Shravan over, the number of people eating fish has gone up. Because more buyers are coming, fish prices have doubled. Large numbers of people are gathering to buy fish, and prices have risen as a result. Fish lovers have been left disappointed.

Fish eaters are many in the Konkan and the crowds are large, so fish is selling at high prices. Pomfret, which used to sell at Rs 500 a kg, now costs Rs 1,200 a kg.

Seer fish, earlier Rs 600 a kg, is now selling at Rs 1,000 a kg. Mori (shark) fish, which used to be available at Rs 300 a kg, now costs Rs 700 a kg. Mackerel (bangda), earlier sold at Rs 200 to Rs 250 a kg, is now available at Rs 500 a kg.

On the whole, the crowd at Malvan's Dandi beach has grown and fish prices have risen with it. Konkan residents and fish eaters are disappointed by the price rise, though because the fish is fresh, people are still coming to this spot to buy.
