Film City flyover on Goregaon-Mulund link road to open October 15
The GMLR flyover will cut travel between Mumbai's western and eastern suburbs from 75 minutes to just 25.
There is relief in sight for commuters who get stuck in daily traffic jams between Mumbai's western and eastern suburbs. A key flyover being built under the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road, or GMLR, project is now nearly ready. The 1.26 kilometre flyover, being constructed between Goregaon and Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari, has entered its final stage of work and will be opened to the public by October 15, 2026.
Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Abhijit Bangar, recently inspected the project site himself and reviewed the ongoing work. The 3x3 lane flyover runs from Dindoshi Court to Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari, and its main construction work is complete. A load test on the bridge will be carried out in the second week of October.
The flyover starts at Dindoshi Court, curves near Ratnagiri Junction Hotel, and comes down at Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari. It has been built using pre-cast reinforced concrete segmental box girders placed on single pillars. The main construction work is 100 percent complete, with a total of 31 pillars and 30 spans erected. Placing beams on the pillars, casting the deck slab and building approach roads on both sides of the flyover have also been completed. Remaining work such as painting, installing direction boards, erecting electric poles, thermoplastic marking, cat's eyes and noise barrier walls is currently underway.
The entire GMLR project is about 12.20 kilometres long, and once complete, it will cut travel time between the western and eastern suburbs from 75 minutes to just 25 minutes. This is also expected to reduce fuel consumption and improve Mumbai's air quality index, or AQI. The BMC considers it a major step towards making life easier for the city's residents.
A load test will be conducted in the second week of October to check the flyover's strength, safety and capacity to bear traffic. After this test, the necessary technical procedures will be completed and the flyover is set to open to traffic by October 15, 2026.
