A newborn elephant calf was separated from its mother and swept away in the strong current of the Teesta river, according to a video that has gone viral on social media.

The calf was carried nearly 5 kilometres downstream by the powerful flow of the river. By the time it had been swept that far, the calf was on the verge of drowning, with the danger to its life growing by the moment.

Local fishermen and a Forest Department team rushed to the spot on noticing the situation and worked to save the calf. Battling the strong current and difficult conditions, the team pulled the drowning calf out safely. With the help of a boat, they rescued the calf and carried it back to its mother in the same boat.

Video of the entire rescue operation was shared from the X account of Mudit Kumar Verma IFS. As noted in the post, the newborn elephant calf had been swept nearly 5 kilometres by the strong current of the Teesta river. The Forest Department team, with the help of local fishermen, rescued the drowning calf and reunited it with its mother. The post described it as a beautiful story of rescue and reunion.

In the video taken after the rescue, the young calf is seen taking small steps towards its mother. So frightened was it by the ordeal that on seeing its mother, it rushed to her and clung to her tightly.

The video has gone widely viral on social media, with many users commenting. One user wrote that they could see only local people in the video, not the Forest Department. Another wrote that the mother elephant must have scolded her calf a great deal. Another user thanked the entire team that reunited the mother and calf and wished them well.
