Ducati, a company known for premium motorcycles, has launched its special Formula 73 motorcycle in India. The bike combines a retro café racer design with present-day technology. Its ex-showroom price is Rs 20 lakh.

There is a catch for buyers, however. Only 873 units of the bike will be built worldwide, and the stock allotted to India has already been sold. Bookings are therefore not open for now.

The motorcycle is dedicated to Ducati's famous 1973 750 Super Sport Desmo. It draws its inspiration from Ducati's win in the 200 Miglia race at Imola in 1972. Silver and aqua-green colours, golden stripes, clip-on handlebars, bar-end mirrors and a small fairing give it a retro look. Each bike will carry a separate serial number and will come with a certificate of authenticity, archive photographs and design sketches.

The bike is powered by an 803 cc air-cooled L-twin Desmodue engine. It produces 73 hp at 8,250 rpm and 65.2 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm. The engine has Desmodromic valve technology and a ride-by-wire throttle system. An exhaust system made by Termignoni suits its sporty personality.

The hardware includes a steel trellis frame, a 41 mm KYB upside-down front fork and preload-adjustable rear suspension. Braking is by a 330 mm front disc and Brembo four-piston calipers. Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tyres are fitted on 17-inch spoke wheels. The bike weighs 183 kg without fuel.

Safety and features include cornering ABS, Ducati Traction Control, quick shift, and Sport and Road riding modes. It also gets a 4.3-inch TFT display and full-LED lighting.

The limited-edition bike is part of Ducati's centenary celebrations. Going by the units set aside for sale in India, it is completely sold out. Whether more units will arrive will depend on the company's next announcement.
