A husband and wife died of dengue within four hours of each other in Kasad village, under Elau police station limits in Uttar Pradesh's Mainpuri district. Mukesh Kumar, 48, died first, and his wife Deepa, 42, breathed her last in hospital hours later. Grief has spread across the village, and their four young children have been orphaned.
According to the information available, Mukesh Kumar was a farmer who supported the family through agriculture. He suddenly developed a high fever on October 19. His family first took him to a local hospital, but as his condition was serious, he was shifted to a hospital in Agra on the doctors' advice. Tests there showed he had dengue. The family hoped he would recover soon and return home.
While Mukesh was being treated, Deepa also developed a fever. She was admitted for treatment to another hospital in Agra. Husband and wife were thus fighting for their lives in separate hospitals, while four children waited for them at home.
Mukesh Kumar died on Wednesday night during treatment. When the news of her husband's death reached Deepa in the other hospital, her condition worsened sharply. She could not bear the shock, and died within four hours.
When the bodies of the couple reached Kasad on Thursday evening, the whole village broke down. Relatives and villagers cremated the couple on a single pyre. Everyone present was moved to tears at the sight of the four small children, who lost both their mother and father in a single night.
