Many students believe a college degree will automatically get them a good job. But in today's corporate world, being good at academics alone is not enough. Companies want employees who can adapt to changing technology, solve problems and work well in a team. That is why it helps to learn certain essential skills before getting a first job.

First on the list is the use of AI and smart technology. One should be able to use generative AI and other digital tools responsibly and effectively. AI can help with writing content, data analysis, research, coding and everyday tasks, but it is just as important to develop the habit of checking the information AI provides.

Second is communication skills. One should be able to convey ideas clearly and directly. Writing emails, giving presentations, talking to clients and listening carefully to others are skills useful in almost every field.

Third is salary and budget management. It helps to build the habit of tracking income and expenses from the very first salary. Setting aside money for essential expenses, savings and personal goals builds financial discipline.

Fourth is an understanding of personal finance. Young people should have basic knowledge of savings, inflation, compound interest, insurance, emergency funds and investment. Before putting money into mutual funds, SIPs or the stock market, it is also important to understand the risks involved.

Fifth is taking initiative. Instead of waiting for a senior's instructions for every small matter at the office, taking responsibility, identifying problems and suggesting solutions on one's own is a habit that helps through a career.

Sixth is problem solving and critical thinking. When a problem arises, it is important to find its cause, analyse the available information and choose the right option. For companies, an employee who can identify a problem is not as valuable as one who can solve it.

Seventh is stress and time management. While handling multiple tasks and deadlines at once, it is important to learn what to prioritise, how to divide time and how to make the right decisions under pressure.

Eighth is digital skills and research. Simply searching the internet is not a digital skill. One should be able to identify reliable sources, verify information and use work-related digital tools such as Excel and project management software.

Ninth is teamwork and collaboration. Most work in the corporate sector is done through teams. It is important to work with people who think differently, handle disagreements professionally, share responsibilities and contribute towards a common goal.

The tenth and final point is being prepared to keep learning continuously. Technology and industry requirements keep changing, so studying does not end after getting a degree. The habit of learning new tools, new skills and changes taking place in one's field is essential for a long career.
