The Datta Meghe Institute of Higher Education and Research, which runs campuses in Nagpur and Wardha districts, is being renamed. It will now be known as the Adani Institute of Higher Education and Research Centre. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved the new name.

The institute's vice chancellor Dr Lalitbhushan Waghmare and chief services officer Ravindra Mehere gave this information. The institute was founded by Datta Meghe in 1990. Starting as a single medical college, it has since grown into a multi-disciplinary university with campuses in Nagpur and Wardha.

The renaming is expected to give a new direction to the collaboration between the Adani Foundation and DMIHER. The focus will be on building centres of excellence to provide affordable health education and quality healthcare.

Dr Waghmare said the institute's commitment to quality education and compassionate healthcare will continue, with an emphasis on working for rural areas and communities that lack access to healthcare facilities. He said the institute will also work on strengthening research, adopting modern technology, and creating new opportunities for students, teachers, researchers, patients and other sections of society.

Chief services officer Ravindra Mehere said Preeti Adani would also extend support to take health education and healthcare to the "next level".

He said Datta Meghe Dental College has so far recorded 100 admissions. About Rs 100 crore will be invested annually across the Nagpur and Wardha campuses. Of this, the process to purchase state-of-the-art medical equipment worth about Rs 55 crore has already begun. The institute said it would also focus on providing world-class equipment and experienced faculty.

Under the agreement between the Datta Meghe institute and the Adani Foundation, operations will follow a "zero management system", under which priority will be given first to patients, followed by students, staff and local employment. The institute also said scholarships worth about Rs 60 crore have been given to students so far.

The Adani Social Foundation will place special emphasis on strengthening research in healthcare. Dr Waghmare said that since sufficient land for research is not available in Nagpur district, the focus there will mainly be on treatment services, while Wardha, where enough land is available, is planned as a major centre for healthcare research.
