For students who want a career in management, business, economics or commerce after Class 12, deciding which entrance test to take is a crucial choice. With many undergraduate admission tests in the country, many wonder whether to opt for CUET or IPMAT. As preparation for the 2027 admission round draws near, it has become all the more necessary to understand the difference between the two.
The Common University Entrance Test (CUET-UG) is a national-level examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It offers a single common route to undergraduate programmes at participating universities and institutions. Courses in commerce, economics, humanities, science and some management-related programmes come under it. The test has language and subject components, and a General Aptitude Test where applicable. However, eligibility conditions, subject combinations and admission criteria differ by university and course. Students should therefore check the official requirements of their preferred institution before choosing CUET subjects.
IPMAT stands for Integrated Programme in Management Aptitude Test. The test is linked to admission to integrated management programmes at participating institutions, and covers in particular the Indian Institutes of Management that run their own admission process. An integrated programme combines undergraduate and postgraduate management education in a single structure. IPMAT is not one common test accepted by all institutions. For instance, IIM Indore and IIM Rohtak hold different entrance tests and follow their own processes. Other institutions may have a different selection method or may accept scores from a different test.
The two tests serve different purposes. CUET keeps options open across many streams, while IPMAT is meant mainly for integrated management programmes. Preparing for IPMAT requires greater emphasis on quantitative aptitude and verbal ability. For CUET, students have to study language, their chosen subjects and the aptitude components that apply. There is no single answer to which test is better. It depends on the student's interests, strengths, preferred institutions and plans for the career ahead.
Those who want to keep their options open can prepare for both tests, but they will need to plan their schedule carefully. Although English comprehension, numerical skills and general aptitude overlap to some extent, the two tests cannot be used in place of each other. Students should divide their time so that preparation for the Class 12 board examinations does not suffer.
It is said that Supergrads can help students with this preparation. The company claims that disciplined study, expert guidance, practice sessions and exam-oriented study material can help students prepare with confidence. The focus is on study planning, understanding concepts properly, improving English and verbal skills, mock tests and their analysis, doubt resolution, time management and regular revision. Students should check what facilities the chosen course includes before enrolling.
The exam pattern, marking scheme, subject combinations and eligibility conditions for 2027 should be checked only from the official notifications of the concerned agencies and institutions. Students should not rely entirely on the pattern of previous years. Mistakes to avoid include choosing a test without learning about the course, studying without a timetable, taking mock tests without reviewing the errors, neglecting school examinations, and assuming that taking one test secures admission everywhere.
