Soap is used every day in every household, yet most people do not think much about how they choose it. Many assume all soaps work the same way, so they pick one based on fragrance, old habit or whatever is available in the shop. In reality, different soaps are made for different skin and cleansing needs. Sandeep Naik, R&D Global Head, Personal Care Products at Godrej Consumer Products, has shared insights on this.

The first mistake is assuming all soaps are alike. According to Naik, all soaps clean the skin, but their purpose differs. Beauty soaps are made to retain skin moisture and often contain ingredients such as glycerine, natural oils and shea butter that help keep skin soft and hydrated. Godrej No.1 soap, for instance, is based on sandalwood, turmeric and natural oils, with sandalwood added for its skin-softening and blemish-reducing properties and turmeric for its antiseptic and nourishing benefits, so that skin becomes soft, glowing and easy to cleanse.

Health soaps, on the other hand, are made to prioritise cleansing above all. They may contain antibacterial or germ-fighting ingredients that reduce germs on the skin and tackle body odour, making them suitable when deeper cleaning is needed. Cinthol Original is a good example, containing antibacterial ingredients that protect against germs and also work as a deodoriser. Doctors recommend it to reduce the risk of skin problems such as acne, blemishes and rashes.

The second mistake is thinking one soap works for every situation. Many people believe that once they like a soap, they can use it forever. But skin needs actually change depending on lifestyle and daily activity. A beauty soap works well for daily bathing and keeping skin soft, while a health soap is more beneficial after exercise, outdoor work or travel, and in hot, humid weather when sweating increases and the risk of germ infection rises.

The third mistake is choosing soap without considering skin type. The same soap is not necessarily beneficial for everyone. Those with dry or sensitive skin benefit from soaps that retain moisture, while people dealing with body odour, acne or minor skin issues can benefit from soaps with specific properties suited to their daily cleansing routine.

The fourth mistake is using the same soap all year round. Skin condition is not the same in every season, so soap should not stay the same either. In summer or the monsoon, increased sweating and humidity in the air make most people prefer soaps that offer better cleansing. In cold or dry weather, conversely, soaps are needed that provide moisture and help maintain the skin's natural protective layer.

Overall, choosing a soap should not be about picking the most popular brand or the biggest claim on the packet. Instead, it is important to understand your own skin, your lifestyle and the specific purpose a soap is designed for. The more thoughtfully this choice is made, the more effective the daily cleansing routine will be in maintaining skin health and personal hygiene.
