The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has announced a large protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on October 10, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The demand appears to be gathering momentum.
The protest has now drawn the support of farmers' organisations. It has emerged that Rakesh Tikait, national spokesperson of the Bharatiya Kisan Union, will take part. This is expected to heat up the political atmosphere in the national capital again.
The union's participation was announced by Anuj Singh, the Bharatiya Kisan Union's Uttar Pradesh youth state president. In a post and a video on social media, he said the union would stand with the protest.
Anuj Singh has appealed to farmers to come to Delhi on October 10. He said Delhi Police should not try to confront the protesters, and warned that farmers' tractors were ready to break through police barricades. He also demanded that Gyanesh Kumar resign from his post immediately.
In his video message, Anuj Singh also raised the issue of the right to vote. He alleged that the "one vote" right given to every citizen by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar through the Constitution was being snatched away. He further alleged that Gyanesh Kumar was a favourite of the Modi government at the Centre and the BJP, and that an attempt was being made to establish a dictatorship in the country.
Anuj Singh claimed that this was not the protest of a single political party but of ordinary citizens. He therefore appealed to citizens and farmers across the country to gather at Jantar Mantar in full strength on October 10.
The CJP has also responded to the farmers' support. It thanked Rakesh Tikait and the Bharatiya Kisan Union for their backing. The CJP claimed that the coming together of farmers and the general public would strengthen the fight to save democracy.
Political circles are now watching how large the October 10 protest at Jantar Mantar grows with Tikait joining it. The stance Delhi Police takes on the protest is also considered important.
