China sends two more pandas to Atlanta Zoo
China has sent two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, to Zoo Atlanta under a 10-year cooperation agreement
Two giant pandas from China have arrived at Zoo Atlanta in the United States. The pandas, named Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, landed in Atlanta on Sunday. Under a cooperation agreement between China and the United States, the two pandas will stay at Zoo Atlanta for the next 10 years. Both pandas were born in 2020 at the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base in Chengdu, China.
Ping Ping is a male panda while Fu Shuang is a female. Their journey from China to the United States was carried out with special arrangements. A special aircraft, purpose-built travel crates and full arrangements for their food and care were made to ensure the pandas' safety. Expert staff also accompanied them during the journey.
The arrival of the two pandas holds special significance for Zoo Atlanta, as the zoo had no pandas for some time after its last panda returned to China in 2024. With the arrival of Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, panda presence has resumed at the zoo.
Ping Ping and Fu Shuang were brought from Chengdu, China, to the United States. After reaching Atlanta airport, they were taken to the zoo in special vehicles. Separate arrangements were made to look after their health and safety during the journey.
Zoo Atlanta has had a long-standing relationship with China on panda conservation and research. Panda families have previously been a major attraction at the zoo. Cooperation on panda conservation between Atlanta and China has been ongoing since 1999, during which seven panda cubs were born at Zoo Atlanta. This new agreement has revived that relationship, generating enthusiasm among zoo administrators as well as local residents.
Although Ping Ping and Fu Shuang have already reached Zoo Atlanta, the public will not get to see them immediately. The two pandas will be kept in quarantine for about a month to help them settle into their new surroundings and to undergo health checks. During this period, experts will monitor their eating habits, health, behaviour and adjustment to the new environment. Only after the quarantine is complete will they be put on display for the public, meaning those eager to see the pandas will have to wait longer.
The arrival of Ping Ping and Fu Shuang marks the start of a new era of pandas at Zoo Atlanta. The two pandas are expected to draw greater public interest while also boosting cooperation between China and the United States on wildlife conservation.
China's programme of sending pandas to other countries is known as "panda diplomacy". Through pandas, China has sought to strengthen cultural, environmental and diplomatic ties with different countries. The decision to send pandas to Atlanta is also seen as significant against this backdrop of cooperation between China and the United States. The arrival of Ping Ping and Fu Shuang is not just an attraction for the zoo but also part of the ongoing international cooperation for the conservation of giant pandas.
