There was a major uproar at the general body meeting of the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC). It is alleged that 16 BJP corporators assaulted ordinary citizens and journalists. A case has been registered against the 16 corporators at Bhayandar police station on this allegation.

According to the information available, the proceedings of the general body were under way when an argument suddenly broke out between citizens seated in the visitors' gallery and corporators over some matter. The quarrel escalated rapidly. It is alleged that the corporators then tried to hit the citizens directly. Tension gripped the hall.

Journalists present at the time began shooting video of the whole incident. The journalists allege that the corporators rushed at them too, tried to hit them and attempted to snatch their phones.

To prevent the situation from worsening, police and security guards present stepped in and calmed matters. However, citizens and journalists sat on a dharna near the ground floor of the municipal corporation building in protest against the incident.

Treating the matter seriously, Bhayandar police have registered a formal case against the 16 BJP corporators. Police have begun examining all CCTV footage and mobile videos of the episode. Police have assured that strict action will be taken against all those found guilty of assaulting citizens and journalists.

It has also emerged that over the past few months, some incidents of assault involving corporators and ordinary citizens have been reported repeatedly. After this latest incident, the question of security has come up for discussion once again.

For now, these are allegations. The police investigation is continuing, and CCTV footage and mobile videos are being examined. A case has been registered, but no information about any arrest has emerged. That such behaviour towards citizens and journalists is alleged at a forum where the city's decisions are taken is serious in itself. All eyes are now on what the police investigation finds and what action is taken against those found guilty.
