BYD is preparing to expand its premium and luxury car range in India. It has emerged that the company's luxury brand Denza will soon enter the country. It is likely to begin with imported models. Denza sits above BYD's existing Dynasty and Ocean ranges but below Yangwang.

Denza began in 2010 as a 50:50 joint venture between BYD and Daimler, and the brand name came into use in 2012. BYD contributed technology related to batteries and electric vehicles, while Daimler brought vehicle-building experience. In September 2024, BYD acquired full ownership of Denza. The brand currently has a range of electric and plug-in hybrid models.

The Denza D9, a luxury MPV, could be one of the initial models in India. The international-spec D9 is 5,250 mm long, 1,960 mm wide and 1,920 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,110 mm. It has a 103.36 kWh battery. The single-motor version has a WLTP range of up to 520 km, while the dual-motor AWD version has a range of up to 480 km. DC fast charging capacity is about 200 kW.

The Denza Z9 GT may also come to India along with the D9. The premium electric fastback is built on the e3 intelligent vehicle control platform. In China it is sold in RWD EV, tri-motor AWD EV and plug-in hybrid versions. According to reports, the top electric version produces about 1,140 hp. It has a second-generation Blade battery and high-speed charging technology.

On pricing, the Denza D9 could cost about Rs 80 lakh to Rs 1 crore in India. The Z9 GT is likely to cost more than Rs 1.20 crore. The D9 could compete with luxury MPVs such as the MG M9, Toyota Vellfire, Kia Carnival and Lexus LM. This suggests BYD is preparing a major leap directly into India's premium luxury segment.
