Buying an electric scooter for long rides? What to check, from seat comfort to performance
Electric scooters are no longer just for short city trips, and range alone should not decide the choice for long rides or intercity touring.
Electric scooters are no longer used only for short trips within the city. Besides the daily commute, many people now use them for long rides and intercity touring. But when choosing a scooter for long distances, looking at range alone is not enough. Seat design, suspension, battery capacity, thermal management and safety features are just as important, so anyone planning to buy a scooter should check all of these together.
For long journeys, the battery should deliver good range in real-world use. The motor should perform consistently and the charging system should be good. Riding continuously at 60-70 km/h puts greater load on the motor and battery. In such conditions, a good thermal management system helps sustain performance. Along with good range, a fast-charging network is also very useful on long trips.
Do not ignore the seat when it comes to comfort. On a long ride, the shape of the seat and the quality of the foam matter a great deal. If the seat is too soft, the body sinks into it, and after a while pressure may be felt on the back or tailbone. A multi-density foam seat that gives proper support is therefore beneficial.
Suspension and riding position are equally important. The distance between the handlebar, the seat height and the floorboard determines the riding position. If the knees and back stay in a natural position, fatigue is reduced. Suspension such as telescopic front forks and a progressive monoshock helps give a comfortable ride even on bad roads and over speed breakers.
Safety features should also be checked. For long journeys, CBS (combined braking system), traction control, skid control and TPMS (tyre pressure monitoring system) are very useful. Features such as regenerative braking also make the ride safer. Features such as FallSafe and crash detection can provide additional protection in an emergency.
In short, when choosing a scooter for long rides, the decision should not rest on range alone. Comfort, performance, charging and safety should all be considered.
