Technology has made online transactions easier, but cases of people being cheated by misusing it are also coming to light. Artificial intelligence (AI) can now be used to create an exact imitation of a person's voice. The technique is called "AI voice cloning". Even when a familiar voice is heard on the phone, it is therefore essential to be cautious before making any money transfer.

AI voice cloning means using AI to create an artificial voice that sounds like a particular person's. Using samples of that person's voice, AI can copy the way they speak, their pronunciation and the features of their voice.

In some cases, voice samples taken from social media videos, public speeches or other recordings can be misused. However, how many samples are needed to copy a voice depends on the technology being used.

Here is how such a fraud can work. A person receives a call and hears the voice of their son or a close relative on the other end. The caller says there has been an accident or that money is needed urgently. Under pressure and emotional distress, the person may send money without verifying.

AI-generated voices can be used in such frauds. But not every suspicious call involves AI voice cloning. Any unexpected demand for money should therefore be checked separately.

First, if money is demanded over the phone, cut the call and ring the person back on their usual number.

Second, fix a code word for the family. Agree on a special word or question among household members to confirm identity in an emergency, and do not share the word with anyone else.

Third, do not send money in haste. If money is demanded urgently citing an accident, an arrest or a medical emergency, verify first.

Fourth, share personal information with care. Voice samples publicly available on social media can be misused, so mind your privacy.

If cyber fraud does occur, contact your bank immediately and file a complaint on the national cybercrime helpline number 1930. A complaint can also be filed on the official portal cybercrime.gov.in.

On the whole, AI voice cloning has made greater care necessary when identifying someone by voice. Even if a voice on the phone sounds familiar, verify separately if money is asked for or sensitive information is sought. Proper use of technology and awareness are the key tools against such fraud.
