Jammu and Kashmir Police organised the "Pedal Through Paradise Cycle Race 2026" to promote sport, fitness and a healthy lifestyle. The race was held on the route from Dal Lake to Harwan in Srinagar, and about 3,000 cyclists took part. Additional Director General of Police (Armed) Nitesh Kumar flagged off the race.
People from different walks of life took part with great enthusiasm, among them young children. The main aims of the event were to keep the body fit through cycling, reduce mental stress and keep young people away from drug addiction.
Umar Hasan, a participant, said people of different ages came to the event, from the elderly to small children. He said he cycles regularly and entered the race to build stamina and with the intention of making a career in cycling later. He said that despite a busy work routine, he had been preparing for the race for the past day or two. In his view, physical activity or any sport helps keep a person away from everyday stress.
Sahid Rahi, a member of the "Pedal Pushers" group, hoped that such races would be held regularly in Jammu and Kashmir. He said activities like cycling can give positive motivation to people struggling with depression, stress and drug addiction.
Mohammad Rafan said he too came to the race to build stamina and stay away from drugs. He appealed to the government to hold such competitions regularly.
According to participant Zulfikar Ali, such races give young people a good platform to prove their physical ability. Small children can also draw inspiration from these events. He said he was confident that children who watch cycling races will be inspired to build careers in cycling or other sports.
Women also took part in large numbers. Isha Bashir urged young people to take up sport. She said sport is a good habit and that such events can help young people stay away from drug addiction.
Through the initiative, Jammu and Kashmir Police sought to send a message of cycling, health, peace of mind and freedom from drugs.
