Aloe vera gel mistakes can harm skin: patch test, latex removal and other precautions
Applying aloe vera gel the wrong way can worsen skin and hair problems, and drinking the juice without medical advice carries risks.
Every woman wants her skin to look beautiful at all times, and many remedies are tried for this. But changes in weather, mental stress, nutrient deficiencies and menstrual problems show on the skin almost immediately. When skin problems grow, people turn to expensive skincare products sold in the market. Aloe vera has been suggested as an alternative to them.
Aloe vera gel is used for both skin and hair. The beneficial compounds in it help keep skin soft and hydrated. But if the gel is applied the wrong way, skin problems can worsen.
A fresh aloe vera leaf contains a yellow, sticky liquid called latex. So once a leaf is cut, it should not be applied directly to the skin or hair. When using fresh aloe vera, first wash it with water. Then drain out the yellow liquid completely, peel off the outer green rind and scoop out the transparent pulp inside with a spoon. Before buying aloe vera gel from the market, check its ingredients.
A patch test has been described as very important before applying aloe vera gel to the face. Without it, the face may itch, burn, redden or swell, and the skin may look odd. Aloe vera gel should be kept away from the area around the eyes and from wounds. To reduce excess heat in the skin, aloe vera gel can be taken in a bowl and a vitamin E capsule mixed into it. Applied to the skin, it will help reduce tan, boost glow and keep the skin hydrated.
Aloe vera gel has also been described as beneficial for hair. To reduce hair fall or dandruff, apply the gel to the scalp and leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes. Then massage gently and wash the hair with a mild shampoo. Proper care is needed when applying the gel to hair, otherwise hair problems can increase.
Aloe vera juice is often extracted and drunk as well. But some compounds in the leaf's yellow latex, if taken in large quantities, make stomach pain, loose motions and other problems more likely. It is therefore very important to consult a doctor before drinking aloe vera. That aloe vera is natural does not mean it will be good for every person.
