The Government Railway Police recovered 36.375 kg of ganja worth Rs 18,17,750 from three passengers at Nagpur railway station on Tuesday afternoon.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Nagpur recovered 36.375 kg of ganja from three passengers during patrolling at Nagpur railway station on Tuesday afternoon. According to police, the ganja is worth Rs 18,17,750.

The GRP has arrested three accused in the case. They have been named as Rajkumar Brahma Giri (22), Bultakumar Rama (20) and Arbaaz Ansari Sarfuddin Ansari (19). All three are residents of Singapatti Jungle in Kushinagar district of Uttar Pradesh.

Police also seized three mobile phones along with the ganja. Items worth a total of Rs 18,52,750 were taken into possession from the accused.

The GRP has been patrolling the station continuously to curb crime and tighten security ahead of the festival season. During this patrol, at around 2 pm on Tuesday, a GRP team spotted three suspicious youths on a platform near the station manager's office. They had three trolley bags and two backpacks.

Suspicious, police questioned the three. Asked what was in the bags, they could not give a satisfactory answer. This deepened the suspicion and police searched all the bags. They found 32 heavy bundles bound with khaki tape, which gave off a strong smell of ganja. Police immediately took the three into custody and questioned them sternly, and they admitted that the packets contained ganja.

The GRP drew up a panchnama as required under the provisions of the NDPS Act. A total of 36.375 kg of ganja from the five bags and the mobile phones of the three accused were seized. It is said to be the biggest action against ganja smuggling at the station in about the past two years.

The action was taken under the guidance of Mangesh Shinde, Superintendent of Police, GRP Nagpur. It was carried out under the leadership of Additional Superintendent of Police Dattaram Rathod and Sub-Divisional Police Officer Pandurang Sonawane, by PI Gaurav Gawande, API Poonam Sirsat, Bhoyar, Yedekar, Dhaugadhi, Gawai and Dhammapal Gabai. RPF CIB's IPF Ambawat, ASI Pankaj Sharma, Lonwale and Jaswir Singh were also involved.

The GRP is now also investigating where the ganja was being brought from and to whom it was to be supplied further.
