10 scooters that claim over 50 kmpl mileage, Hero and TVS lead the list
Ten petrol scooters in India claim 50 kmpl or more, led by the Hero Destini 125 and the Yamaha RayZR 125 Fi Hybrid
If fuel economy is the top priority when buying a new scooter, several petrol scooters in the Indian market claim a mileage of 50 kmpl or more. The list includes 110cc and 125cc scooters. The Hero Destini 125 claims 59 kmpl, while the TVS Jupiter 110 claims 53.85 km per litre.
For those who ride a scooter to work every day, these figures can save a fair amount of money. But they should not be taken as a guarantee of real world mileage, since traffic, riding style, tyre pressure, the load on the vehicle and when it was last serviced all affect fuel consumption.
The 10 scooters that touch or exceed the 50 kmpl mark are: Hero Destini 125 (59 km per litre), Hero Destini 110 (56.2 km per litre), Hero Destini Prime (56 km per litre), TVS Jupiter 110 (53.85 km per litre), Hero Xoom 110 (53.4 km per litre), Hero Pleasure+ XTEC (52.1 km per litre), Hero Destini 125 XTEC (59 km per litre), Yamaha RayZR 125 Fi Hybrid (71.33 km per litre), Suzuki Avenis 125 (55 km per litre) and TVS Jupiter 125 (57 km per litre).
The Hero Destini 125 has an ex-showroom price of Rs 75,838. It has a 124.6cc engine and the company's i3S idle stop-start technology, which switches the engine off automatically when the vehicle stops in traffic so fuel is not wasted. The Hero Destini 110 is priced at Rs 73,900 and has a 110.9cc engine, available in VX and ZX variants. The Hero Destini Prime is a 125cc scooter priced at Rs 70,430, and the company says its mileage figure comes from testing by a government certified agency.
The TVS Jupiter 110 has a 113.3cc engine, is priced at Rs 74,125, and has an ARAI certified mileage of 53.85 kmpl. The Hero Xoom 110 also has a 110.9cc engine, is priced at Rs 74,321, and has an ICAT certified mileage of 53.4 kmpl. The Hero Pleasure+ XTEC is a scooter in the 110cc segment, priced at Rs 69,770, with a 110.9cc engine, and has an ICAT certified mileage of 52.1 kmpl.
The Hero Destini 125 XTEC is priced at Rs 79,338 and its mileage is also listed at 59 kmpl, using the same 124.6cc engine as the Destini 125. The Yamaha RayZR 125 Fi Hybrid is priced at Rs 79,880, has a 125cc Blue Core engine with hybrid assist technology, and its mileage is listed at 71.33 kmpl. The Suzuki Avenis 125 has a 124.3cc engine, is priced at Rs 83,793, runs on the company's SEP technology, and has a mileage of 55 kmpl. The last scooter on the list is the TVS Jupiter 125, priced at Rs 81,700, with a 124.8cc engine that has TVS's Ecothrust fuel injection technology and an idle stop-start system, with a mileage of 57 kmpl.
In everyday use, hitting the 50 kmpl figure is not guaranteed, since certified mileage is measured under controlled, ideal conditions. On real roads, signals, traffic, frequent braking and extra load come into play, and the companies themselves acknowledge this. For someone riding 30 to 40 km a day, this small difference can add up to a decent saving over a few months. So before buying a scooter, do not go by the mileage figure alone. Look also at engine capacity, price, servicing cost and fuel tank size, since together these affect the scooter's overall running cost.
