According to police, a Canara Bank branch and its ATM centre are located near Shedge Ali Road in Sadashiv Peth. Around midnight on Tuesday (26 October), unidentified thieves entered the ATM centre. They badly damaged the ATM machine and also caused extensive damage to the passbook printing machine installed next to it. The thieves intended to take cash from the ATM.
The incident came to light on Tuesday morning when the bank began work. Bank officials found the machines broken and informed the police without delay.
On receiving the information, a senior officer of Vishrambaug police station and an investigation team reached the spot immediately and inspected the site. Police have taken possession of footage from the CCTV cameras at the bank's ATM and are going through it closely. The footage is being used to identify the thieves, who fled. Police say they will be caught as soon as possible.
Police Sub-Inspector Mokashi is investigating the case further. For now, police are trying to trace the thieves from the images captured on camera. Despite the damage to both the ATM and the passbook printing machine, the thieves could not take away any cash.
