Pune, October 23, 2026: The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) in Pune has ordered compensation of Rs 16.72 lakh to be paid to the elderly mother of a delivery worker who died in a road accident. The amount is to be paid by the owner of the Mercedes-Benz car, the Serum Institute of India, and the insurer, New India Assurance Company. The accident took place in Yerawada in June 2024, when the car ran over the delivery worker and he died.
Member-Judge S R Agarwal, who presided over the tribunal, said in the judgment that the car owner and the insurance company could pay the compensation jointly or separately.
The deceased was Kedar Mohanrao Chavan, 41, a resident of Padmavati. He worked as a delivery executive with a private courier company.
The accident occurred around 1 pm on June 18, 2024, in front of the Golf Club in Yerawada. Chavan was travelling from Golf Club Chowk towards the Yerawada Jail Post Office when his two-wheeler suddenly skidded and he fell on the road. A Mercedes-Benz coming from behind at high speed hit the two-wheeler and ran over him. He suffered serious injuries and died during treatment.
Police registered a case against the car driver under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act. Police later filed a chargesheet in the case.
Chavan's elderly mother, through her lawyer V S Navale, filed a compensation claim before the tribunal against the car owner and the insurance company. The tribunal examined the evidence and arguments presented by both sides. It then concluded that the accident was caused by the negligence of the car driver, and ordered compensation on that basis.
