Operators charging above government-set fares will face action under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and passengers can complain on WhatsApp.

The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has issued a clear warning to private bus operators. The office has told them not to charge more than the fares fixed by the government during the Diwali rush. Operators who charge excess fares will face action under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and the rules framed under it. Regional Transport Officer Archana Gaikwad shared the information on Tuesday after a meeting with bus operators.

The RTO had received complaints that some bus operators were charging arbitrary fares as demand rose during the festive season. Gaikwad said operators must keep fares within the limit set by the government. She also made it clear that anyone found charging more than that during Diwali would face action.

Under a state government decision of April 20, 2018, private bus operators must follow the fare limit fixed for them. Demand for travel between cities generally rises during festivals, so the RTO will keep a closer watch on bus operators during this period.

Passengers who are charged excess fares, or who notice any other violation, should complain on WhatsApp number 8275330209. While complaining, they should give their name and mobile number and send a photograph of the bus ticket, which will let officials verify the complaint. The RTO has also advised passengers to keep their tickets safe and attach the necessary details when complaining.

The meeting was also meant to discuss road safety. Drivers were told not to drive after drinking, not to use mobile phones while driving, and to follow all road safety rules. They were also reminded to put passenger safety first and to keep all required vehicle documents valid.

Deputy Regional Transport Officer Swapnil Bhosale attended the meeting, along with Rahul Phasale and Rohit Arsul, both assistant regional transport officers on probation. Twenty-six representatives of the bus operators' association also took part.

The warning has been issued as the annual festive-season rush begins. The number of passengers travelling to their home towns rises during this period, and ticket prices often go up too because of the high demand.
