Pune, October 27: The Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Pune has issued a clear warning to private bus operators not to charge passengers more than the fare limit fixed by the government during Diwali. Regional Transport Officer Archana Gaikwad said action would be taken under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and related rules against operators who break the rules.
Passenger traffic surges during Diwali, and complaints of private buses charging excessive fares are common at this time. In view of this, the Pune RTO held a meeting with representatives of private bus operators. The meeting discussed ensuring that passengers are not overcharged and that safety on the road is maintained.
Deputy Regional Transport Officer Swapnil Bhosale and probationary Assistant Regional Transport Officers Rahul Phasale and Rohit Arsul were present. Twenty-six representatives of the bus operators' association also attended.
Under a Government Resolution (GR) dated April 20, 2018, private bus operators must charge fares within the prescribed limit. The RTO will keep a close watch on operators during the festival season and take action against those found violating the rules.
The RTO has also directed bus operators to ensure that their drivers do not drive under the influence of alcohol or use mobile phones while driving. Operators have been asked to see that road safety rules are followed, to give passengers' safety top priority and to keep all required vehicle documents valid.
Passengers who are charged more than the fare limit, or who notice any other violation, can file a complaint on WhatsApp at 8275330209. The RTO has asked complainants to send their name, mobile number and a photograph of the ticket along with the details of the complaint.
