Pune businesses try AI to check CCTV footage and track payments

Pune, October 24, 2026: Police and security agencies have deployed AI technology to identify suspicious people in the crowds at festival processions and rallies. Ordinary people and businesses in Pune are now following the same path. Restaurants and food stalls are combining AI and CCTV services to make security and payment more certain.

A businessman from Parvati Payatha said: "We upload the CCTV footage to ChatGPT, look for the man we suspect of not paying, and make a clear picture of him as a defaulter."

Businesses see AI as an emerging security measure and find hope in it, because it lets them try new methods without raising their running costs.

Another restaurant owner said: "We have not yet had a chance to try it properly, because our customers are good and honest people. But in busy hours it helps to see who has paid and who has not."

The use of CCTV footage in this way also raises questions about customers' privacy and the handling of their personal data. In India, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025 are in force, setting out the framework for processing and protecting digital personal data.

Pune's businesses are testing the use of AI in their daily work. The technology is slowly entering conversations about restaurant arrangements, keeping watch on customers and keeping payment accounts. Its use is moving beyond older security systems into new areas.
