The Pune Municipal Corporation met Finland's Consul General to discuss cooperation on water management, wastewater treatment, sustainable urban growth and youth skilling.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is exploring the possibility of working with Finland on water management, wastewater treatment and reuse, sustainable urban development and skill development for young people.

A meeting was held between Finland's Consul General, Petra Theman, and senior PMC officials. It discussed how Finnish technology and practices could be useful in the city's development.

Mayor Manjusha Nagpure, Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram and Additional Commissioners Pavneet Kaur and Omprakash Diwate were present. Senior officials from various departments also attended.

The mayor said study visits should be arranged for PMC engineers so that they can see Finland's successful water management initiatives first-hand. The administration says the effort is part of exploring international partnerships that could help Pune's development.

Commissioner Ram spoke of Pune's cultural heritage, its contribution to education, its industrial strength and its rapidly expanding urban area. He said it was important to learn from Finland's experience in water management and sewage treatment.

Ram also showed interest in understanding modern international technology and best practices to implement the "Drink from Tap" initiative effectively in Pune. The initiative will need treatment and monitoring systems that ensure water supplied through the city's network meets the required standards for drinking water.

Additional Commissioner Omprakash Diwate outlined the challenges Pune faces in land-use planning and urban development. He also said that as infrastructure grows in the city, space for planting trees is running short.

The discussion also looked at how Finnish companies could be linked to PMC's skill development initiatives so that a workforce is prepared according to industry needs. The aim was to identify the areas in which international expertise could help both urban development and employment.

Additional Commissioner Pavneet Kaur briefed the Consul General on investment opportunities in Pune, the single-window clearance system for business and the city's infrastructure.

Kaur also described PMC's Lighthouse skill development centres, where young people receive training suited to industry requirements. The possibility of building a strong link between Finnish industries and Pune's trained youth was also discussed. Theman expressed a wish to visit a Lighthouse skill development centre at some point.

Theman praised Pune's greenery, industrial capacity and opportunities in urban development. She said Finland's expertise in engineering, digital technology and industrial solutions could contribute to the city's progress.

She also stressed designing skill programmes to match industry needs, retaining trained workers, and strengthening dialogue to deepen economic ties between India and Finland.
