The state's public health department will give orders to 674 specialist doctors and 766 MBBS doctors at a ceremony, aimed at strengthening rural, remote and tribal health services.

The Maharashtra government has taken a major step to strengthen the state's public health system. Through the public health department, appointment orders will be given to 1,440 medical officers of the Maharashtra Medical and Health Service Group A (S-20) cadre.

A special ceremony has been arranged for November 4. Of the 1,440 doctors, 674 are specialists and 766 are MBBS doctors. The appointments will give significant support to health services in rural, remote and tribal areas.

The medical officer cadre in the state has 2,514 posts in all. An advertisement for 1,440 of these posts was issued on February 27, 2026. In the same process, 674 specialist medical officers and 766 MBBS medical officers have been selected. All of them will be handed appointment orders on November 4.

Specialist doctors are expected to strengthen various treatment services at rural hospitals, sub-district hospitals and district hospitals. MBBS doctors are expected to help improve day-to-day patient care at primary health centres.

Doctors' posts lie vacant in many rural, hilly and tribal areas of the state, forcing people to travel to big cities for treatment. The new appointments are expected to help people get tests, diagnosis and treatment locally.

The chances of timely medical help in obstetric cases, accidents, snakebite, infectious diseases and other emergencies are expected to rise. Maternal and child health services, routine check-ups and the pace of treatment for various illnesses are also expected to improve.

With more doctors, the extra workload on those now in service is expected to ease. Government hospitals are also expected to work more effectively in their outpatient departments, inpatient wards, emergency services and diagnostic processes.

Public Health Minister Prakash Abitkar said providing good health services close to home for the poor, the needy and people in rural areas is the government's priority. He also appealed to the newly appointed doctors to work with a spirit of service and a patient-centred approach. The appointments are expected to give new direction to the work of strengthening the state's public health system.
