Every drinking water sample checked in Western Railway's Mumbai Central division has come out clean, according to the railway. Officials say all 315 tests returned satisfactory results, a 100 per cent compliance rate.

The testing ran for a week, from October 17 to 23, 2026. Of the 315 tests, 263 measured residual chlorine and the other 52 were bacteriological. The administration says not one sample fell outside the quality norms laid down for drinking water.

The exercise was led by the zonal railway's medical department. Its stated purpose was to make sure that passengers and railway staff have access to safe, clean water to drink.

As part of the drive, teams drew water from drinking taps and water coolers at stations and at other railway premises. Besides the residual chlorine level, they also assessed total dissolved solids (TDS) in the water.

The railway said that regular testing and monitoring are necessary to keep drinking water safe and to protect the health of both commuters and employees. It described the results as satisfactory across the board, and it said the 263 chlorine tests and 52 bacteriological tests together make up the full set of 315, each of which met the prescribed standards.

The administration added that the checks will not stop with this week-long drive. Inspections will continue at stations and railway premises across the Mumbai Central division, so that hygiene and cleanliness standards are followed and safe drinking water stays available to the people who use the network. Monitoring will carry on in the same way, the railway said, keeping the health of passengers and employees in view.
