The Mumbai Central division of Western Railway ran a special cleanliness and food safety drive at railway stations, in trains and in railway colonies. Fines totalling Rs 48,000 were collected from 50 people caught littering.
Besides those fined, 82 other people were counselled on the importance of keeping the premises clean.
The campaign focused on three things: improving cleanliness, ensuring food safety and keeping railway premises clean. During the drive, railway officials collected more than 2,500 kg of waste and disposed of it scientifically.
Railway staff removed unauthorised posters, banners and stickers from station premises and railway colonies. Gutka and paan stains were also cleaned from several places to improve the appearance and cleanliness of public areas.
The drive covered railway stations, residential colonies and trains. The emphasis was on identifying places that need more cleaning, so that garbage does not accumulate.
Railway officials also inspected food stalls and pantry cars to check whether food safety standards were being followed. Vendors were directed to maintain cleanliness and follow the prescribed safety rules.
Water quality was also tested using the H2S test, to find out whether there was a possibility of bacterial contamination.
The initiative is part of the railway administration's larger efforts to promote cleanliness, stop littering and improve cleanliness on railway premises.
Through fines, public counselling and strict inspections, Western Railway wants passengers and vendors to follow cleanliness rules. It also wants to contribute to a safe and clean travel environment.
